WHAT’S THE POINT OF ST LEONARD’S?

Is it an enormous museum, full of old bits of stone and wood? Is it an enormous mausoleum, the final resting place of peculiar ideas? Can it be of any conceivable relevance to 21st century people, who take the findings of science seriously and who have neither the ability nor the inclination to inhabit the thought-forms of 2000 or more years ago?

In fact, St Leonard’s is one of an increasing number of churches throughout the country which is trying to change the image of the Church as a private members’ club, open only to those who can get their minds around a lot of odd beliefs. The link on the Home page to our being an ‘Open and Affirming Church’ gives some pointers to what this means. And it shows that people who join us for services (see Worship link) or discussion (see Study Courses link) are not required to leave their brains at the church door. Instead they are treated as fully grown-up and thoughtful human beings. Our congregation contains a wide range of theological views, ranging from the orthodox to the radical, with all shades in between. No one view is given precedence, and all are welcome. Discussion and questioning are positively encouraged, and many lively group sessions result.

We make no attempt to offer simple, pseudo-answers to life’s Big Questions; but we do try to provide a framework and an environment where such questions are taken seriously, and to give the spiritual space in which people can wrestle with Mystery. If this sounds like the sort of church you have been looking for, get in touch – or simply turn up. We’ll be delighted to see you!
